Arrive

The early church in Acts is sometimes reduced to an attractive picture of people getting along. Luke gives something more demanding: a community shaped by repeated practices and shared resources.

Read the summary and mark every action the believers do together.

Reflect

They devote themselves. Community is not sustained by occasional enthusiasm alone. Teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer become rhythms that form people over time. Each practice keeps the church connected to Jesus and to one another.

Their sharing is material. Possessions are sold and distributed as needs arise. The passage should not be romanticised in a way that ignores later conflict, but neither should its economic challenge be softened. Fellowship reaches the question of whether someone among us lacks what others can share.

Meals carry gladness and sincerity. A table can reveal who is welcome, who serves, who receives and who remains invisible. The community’s public favour is connected with an embodied life that neighbours can observe, not only a message they hear.

Consider your own community. Which practice is strong, and which is thin? Perhaps the next step is not another event but a more faithful rhythm: regular prayer, shared food, transparent need or generosity organised so dignity is protected.

Pause and notice

A few questions to sit with

  1. Which shared practice currently gives your community life?
  2. Whose practical need might be invisible from the usual table?
  3. What resource, time or responsibility could be shared more fairly?

Pray

Spirit of God, form us into a generous people. Deepen our teaching, prayer and fellowship, widen our tables and make us attentive to needs that warm words alone cannot meet. Amen.
