Arrive
Elijah leaves the centre of royal power and lives beside a seasonal stream. The prophet who has spoken a hard word must now depend on water, wild creatures and repeated daily provision.
Read 1 Kings 17:1–7. Notice both what sustains Elijah and what remains fragile.
Reflect
God directs Elijah to a particular place. The brook offers water, and ravens bring bread and meat morning and evening. Provision arrives through parts of creation Elijah cannot control.
The rhythm matters. Morning and evening food teaches daily dependence rather than mastery. Elijah receives what comes and waits for what will be needed next.
Yet the brook eventually dries because there has been no rain. The passage does not deny the real consequences of drought. God’s care does not make ecological crisis imaginary.
We can receive this story as an invitation to gratitude, flexible trust and attention to unexpected help. We should not use it to dismiss hunger or tell people to wait passively. Communities can become part of provision by sharing food, protecting water and responding practically to scarcity.
Pause and notice
A few questions to sit with
- What parts of creation sustain Elijah?
- Why might morning-and-evening provision shape trust differently from a large supply?
- How can gratitude become practical care for people and places facing scarcity?
Pray
God of daily bread, meet people living with uncertainty and protect creation under strain. Make us grateful for unexpected provision and willing to share what others need today. Amen.
Carry it with you
Complete one ripple and one raven in the unfinished scene. Then contribute food, funds or time to a reliable local hunger-relief effort.
