“Let love be without hypocrisy” is followed by actions. Paul does not leave love as a private feeling or polished identity. It takes shape in honour, generosity, patience, empathy and peace.
Read the passage slowly enough to hear each phrase as a practice rather than a slogan.
Reflect
Genuine love rejects evil and clings to good. It is not niceness that avoids moral clarity. Love can oppose what harms people while refusing contempt as its organising energy.
The community is asked to honour others, share with those in need and pursue hospitality. These actions move attention away from self-display. Hospitality is pursued, suggesting initiative: noticing who is outside the usual circle and making room with dignity.
Paul also names empathy—rejoicing and weeping with others. This requires resisting the urge to redirect another person’s moment toward our own experience. Love stays present long enough for someone else’s joy or grief to remain central.
“As much as it is up to you, be at peace with all people” recognises limits. Peace is pursued, but it is not always achieved by one person’s effort. The verse must not be used to send someone back into abuse or remove protective boundaries. We can practise love faithfully without controlling another person’s response.

A few questions to sit with
- Which practice in this passage would make your love more concrete?
- Who needs honour, welcome or empathy rather than advice from you?
- Where does pursuing peace include a wise and truthful boundary?
Pray
God of genuine love, move my care from intention into practice. Teach me to honour, welcome, share and seek peace with courage, wisdom and truthful boundaries. Amen.
