We often turn even good things into evidence that we deserve our place. Paul removes that burden: salvation is gift, not achievement.
Then, without contradiction, he speaks of work prepared for us.
Reflect
Grace excludes boasting because no person builds the foundation of salvation. We receive life from God’s mercy.
“We are his workmanship” describes people as God’s work before describing the work they do. Identity is received before activity is offered.
Good works still matter. Grace frees action from self-salvation so it can become service shaped by love, justice and the common good.
Choose work that serves rather than advertises you. It may be ordinary, hidden or collaborative. Its value does not depend on applause.
Pause and notice
A few questions to sit with
- Where are you trying to earn what is gift?
- How does received identity change your work?
- Who is served by the next good action?
Pray
God of grace, free me from earning and boasting. Form me as your workmanship and lead me into good work that genuinely serves others. Amen.
Carry it with you
Complete one useful object and write beside it the name of the person or community your next action will serve.
