Arrive
Samuel hears his name but does not yet recognise the speaker. His confusion is not treated as failure. He gets up, asks for help and slowly learns how to respond.
Read the scene at its nighttime pace. Notice how repetition creates room for recognition.
Reflect
God’s call comes personally, yet Samuel needs community to understand it. Eli is imperfect, but he still helps the younger servant name what may be happening. Discernment is often both personal and shared.
“Speak, for your servant hears” is a posture of availability rather than a technique for producing revelation. Samuel does not control what God will say. He offers attention before he has an outcome.
Not every thought or strong feeling is God’s voice. Christian listening is tested by Scripture, the character of Jesus, truthful wisdom and the fruit a direction produces. Seeking counsel is not weak faith; it can protect us from baptising impulse as certainty.
Choose one place where you need guidance. Become quiet enough to notice, but do not pressure yourself to manufacture an answer. Ask God for light, write what you observe and take it to someone trustworthy.
Pause and notice
A few questions to sit with
- Where are you trying to force clarity instead of becoming available?
- Who is a wise and trustworthy guide you can consult?
- How will you test what you think you are hearing?
Pray
Speak, Lord, and make me willing to listen. Give me patience, humility and wise companions so that my response is shaped by truth rather than impulse. Amen.
