Arrive
At noon beside Jacob’s well, Jesus begins by asking for help. He has no bucket, and the Samaritan woman has the means to draw water. The conversation therefore starts with dependence rather than superiority staged for effect.
Read John 4:4–42. Listen to the woman’s questions as carefully as Jesus’ answers.
Reflect
The woman immediately names the social boundary between a Jewish man and a Samaritan woman. She is alert to history and to the unusual character of Jesus’ request.
Their conversation moves through living water, her household story and the contested place of worship. Jesus speaks truthfully about her life, but the text never calls her sexually immoral. We should not add shame Scripture does not name.
She engages theology, considers whether Jesus may be the Messiah and returns to her town. Her invitation—come and see—allows neighbours to investigate rather than forcing a conclusion upon them.
The encounter grows into communal welcome as Jesus stays with the Samaritans. Faithful witness can begin with honest questions, cross inherited boundaries and make room for people to encounter Jesus without being reduced to their most vulnerable personal details.
Pause and notice
A few questions to sit with
- How does Jesus place himself in need at the start?
- What shows that the woman is an active theological participant?
- How does her invitation respect the agency of her neighbours?
Pray
Jesus, living water for every community, meet us in truthful conversation. Free us from inherited contempt and careless shame, and teach us to invite others with dignity, curiosity and grace. Amen.
Carry it with you
Extend the road between the well and town. Have one respectful conversation this week in which you ask a sincere question and listen before responding.
